Rotational moulding is a process that uses a type of plastic known as polyethylene powder. Next, this powder is poured into a mould, which is a large hollow form that mimics the final shape that you want to produce. The compound fills the underside of the mould and the lid is shut tightly and heated. The powder melts, adhering to the sides, forming a layer of plastic, as the mould rotates in slow motion.
Ensure the mould is clean and dry before process begins. Dirt or water that gets into the mould can ruin the final product. When the mould is set the polyethylene powder is carefully weighed and poured into the mould. The mould is closed — and put in an oven to bring it to temperature.
As the Rotomolding Aluminum Mould, the melted polyethylene powder fills out and coats the inside walls of the mould. This requires you to ensure that you are confirming that the final product is robust and long-lasting. A clear plastic film needs to be under tension as one applies the coated side to avoid weak seams or bubbles in the final layer.
Once the mould manufacturer has melted and coated the inside of the mould, it’s time to cool everything down. The mould is removed from the oven and slowly cooled so the plastic hardens properly. Once the plastic cools, the mould opens to reveal the product. So it’s always fun to find out how things worked out!
There are a few burrs of plastic hanging off right after the product comes out of the mould, so some trimming or sanding is required. This is known as post-processing and it helps ensure that the product looks good. Quality control also plays a great role in rotational molding. Each product is inspected to ensure it meets our strict standards for strength and durability. If any issues are discovered, the product may need to be melted and remade.
